Graduate Schools Accredited in Accounting in the District of Columbia

Located along the Potomac River on the East Coast of the United States surrounded by Virginia and Maryland, the District of Columbia is a federal district that is under the exclusive jurisdiction of Congress and serves as the location of the nation’s capital. Also informally referred to as Washington, DC, the District of Columbia is the 24th most populous region in the country with a population of over 632,350 residents. In addition to being home to many national monuments and museums, the District of Columbia is the location of the famous National Mall as the center of all three branches of the federal government. Although the District is known for hosting 176 foreign embassies, the following is the only graduate accounting program that has been formerly accredited by the AACSB in the District of Columbia.

Howard University

School of Business

As a historically black college situated in the heart of the District of Columbia, Howard University is a culturally diverse, comprehensive, research intensive private university. Howard’s faculty members represent the world’s most concentrated number of black scholars from Europe, Asia, Africa, South and Central America, and the Middle East. Founded on a tradition of quality education since 1867, the U.S. News and World Report survey from 2014 has nationally recognized Howard University as the 142nd best college and 3rd best historically black university in the entire nation.

As the first business school in Washington, DC to be fully accredited by the Association of Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the HU School of Business has an impressive retention rate of 90 percent and a student to faculty ratio of 16:1. The School has been recognized for having the most African American alumni members that are employed by Wall Street firms, have become Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), and represented at top American corporations than any other university in the nation. The HU School of Business was nationally ranked as the 9th best for most competitive MBA graduates by the Princeton Review.

Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a Concentration in Accounting

Restricted to Howard University graduates with an undergraduate degree in accounting who graduated in May 1997 or later, the Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a concentration in accounting program is a five-year graduate accounting degree program. In addition to the core course curriculum requirement for obtaining an MBA degree, students in the program are required to complete 15 credit hours of concentration courses. Within the required accounting practicum, students are given practical experience in the field through internships in leading accounting firms and research papers on the skills needed to be successful in the accounting profession.
